The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is planning to introduce value-added tax (VAT) to the Middle East region to bring it in line with the tax systems of other parts of the world.

And e-commerce giant Noon is planning to join the alliance and agree to follow the rules of the system.

The plan is set to come into effect from January next year, which means Noon will charge consumers 5% VAT.

This will bring the company's tax rate in the region in line with those of countries such as the European Union, Australia and Canada.

Noon was founded by Emirati Mubarak Altharwani and launched officially in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi in January 2017.

It offers a range of products including clothing, electronics, furniture and construction materials.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Noon currently operates in 13 markets in the Middle East and is planning to expand to Lebanon in March, with the introduction of VAT set to further widen its reach.

Noon has so far raised US$500 million in investment, including US$200 million from the Abu Dhabi Investment Fund (ADIF).

ADIF has been accused of accounting fraud and misusing funds, and Noon's founder Mubarak Altharwani has been caught up in the scandal.

However, Altharwani has denied the allegations and says he, like ADIF and other investors, is a victim.
